My mother and I arrived with a legal visa, and arrived three months before the Cuban missiles crises closed Cuba for good. Cuban born to Cuban parents, my father escaped Cuba in a boat 20 feet long, with 16 people in it, traveled in the evening and landed safely the next day in Key Marathon Florida. Worked his tail off as a dishwasher, bus boy, and waiter while fixing cars after work often at night. Long story short; eventually he open up his own Exxon gas station, now although he is retired, he owns a repair shop and has three mechanics working for him and he still goes to work six days a week from open to close. About me… Graduated from Carle Place High School in 1978, attended Nassau Community College, received 28 credits. Just like everyone else unfortunately; once I was entrenched in the USPS all my focus was the USPS. I didn’t consider going back and finishing a business degree. I owned my own stationery Card & Gift store for over four years from 1983-1987. I worked as a sales associate for continental baking for two years, then I was hired by the USPS in 1989 at age 30. I’m still single, never married, although I do have one very intelligent niece, who’s my heart beat. I started as a letter carrier, became a 204-b within a years’ time, back and forth as a 204-b for five years to the Wantagh Post Office, during PMG Marvin Runyon era, 1994-95. Once the hiring freeze ended, and SCS jobs were posted again, I was then made the automation Supervisor in charge of DPS machines in Syosset PO. In 1995-99 I became in charge of delivery at the Syosset Post Office. I was then detailed to route inspection teams for several years when they need route examiners. I Eventually was taught the inputting of route inspection data, and became the team leader from 2000-2002 conducting many office inspections throughout my district. I then became a NAPS-VP elected branch officer in 2006. I received a number of spot awards and many other rewards throughout my Postal career for commitment to the service. Then became OIC in 2004, and eventually became the Postmaster at the Oyster Bay PO in 2006, home of the 26th President of the United States of America ...Teddy Roosevelt. |
